What is acupuncture and how does it work?
Acupuncture is a medical modality rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine that involves placing very thin needles at specific points on the body. In Chinese medicine, this helps balance the flow of energy (called Qi) through pathways known as meridians. From a Western perspective, acupuncture stimulates nerves, muscles, and connective tissue, which may boost the body’s natural painkillers and improve circulation. Together, these effects help restore balance, reduce pain, and support overall wellness
Is acupuncture safe?
Yes, when performed by a licensed acupuncturist, acupuncture is extremely safe. All needles are sterile, single-use, and disposed of immediately after treatment. Risks are very low, though minor bruising or soreness can occur. It’s important to let your practitioner know if you are pregnant or have a pacemaker or other medical devices, as certain techniques may not be appropriate.
Does acupuncture hurt?
Most people are surprised at how little discomfort they feel. The needles are extremely thin—about the width of a human hair. You may notice a quick pinch or a dull ache, tingling, or warmth at the site, but many patients find the experience relaxing, and some even fall asleep during treatment. Most patients describe the sensation as far more comfortable than they expected.
What conditions can acupuncture treat?
Pain & Recovery: Back, neck, sciatica, arthritis, sports injuries, postoperative pain, carpal tunnel, tennis/golfer’s elbow.
Emotional & Neurological Health: Stress, anxiety, depression, headaches, migraines, neuropathy, trigeminal neuralgia, vertigo, post‑stroke recovery, Bell’s palsy, traumatic brain injury.
Women’s Wellness & Hormonal Health: Menstrual irregularities, PMS, menopause, fertility support, pregnancy/postpartum care, hormone imbalance.
Immune & General Health: Allergies, asthma, sleep disturbances, digestive issues, immune support, overall wellness.
How many treatments will I need?
Treatment plans vary for each person. Many patients start with twice‑weekly sessions for several weeks, then taper to weekly and eventually monthly maintenance visits. Some notice improvement after just a few treatments, while others benefit from a longer, individualized plan.
What should I expect during my first visit?
Your first appointment lasts about 90 minutes and includes a consultation, assessment, and your first treatment. Needles remain in place for 20–30 minutes, and most patients feel deeply relaxed. After your treatment, our practitioner will discuss the treatment plan with you and schedule follow-up appointments. We’ll walk you through each step, so you feel comfortable and informed.
What to wear during my visit?
Wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows easy access to your arms and legs. If needed, we provide sheets and draping for your comfort.
Are there any side effects of acupuncture?
Side effects are usually mild and temporary. They may include slight bruising, minor bleeding, dizziness, or feeling tired afterward. Serious complications are extremely rare when treatment is performed by a qualified practitioner. Most patients leave feeling calm, balanced, and energized.
Do you accept insurance?
At our Greeley acupuncture clinic, we do not process insurance at this time. However, if you know your insurance covers acupuncture, we’ll provide a detailed receipt (called a superbill) that you can submit to your insurance company for possible reimbursement. Coverage varies by plan, so we recommend checking with your provider before your appointment.
